Book cover

Especially against the bachground of topics which come within the sphere of cultural studies, the topic "The making of Musical instrument in Intercultural Discours" involves manifold problems and issues which were adopted within the context of an internation workshop that took place in 2004. This report documents the variety of current research and provdes articles that - partly from the perspective of theoretical approaches and partly from various exemplary observations - raise questions about the specific conditions and procedures of mutual cultural exchange between former German-speaking areas and the Eastern parts of Europe.

This book is a multi lingual book. The authors wrote their essays in their own language, next the essays are translated into German, followed by an abstract in English. Some of the authors delivered an essay in English. In these cases the article are translated into German, with in abstract in the native language of the author.

Interdisciplinary Perspective - Culture Transfer

There has been a change in the scientific discussion of national cultures and their history over the past 20 years. With recourse to inter-disciplinary theoretical concepts, culture is no longer described as a fixable sense of being but rather as a more complex process that is formed in various ways, whose dynamics is the result of permanent movements between attributing matters to oneself or others.

Cultural transfer - understood as the circulation of cultural elements, and their de- and re-contextualisation - can now be seen as central principle of cultural processing, whereas the crossing of man-made borders remains not simply, but still primarily, connect with the concept of national identities. The contribution intends to briefly describe these scientific developments , which have been summarised since the 1980s in term “cultural transfer research” [Kulturtransferforschung ] and to list potential consequences for musicological issues.

Interdisciplinary Perspective - Economic and Social History

Studies on corporate history frequently ten to view business processes more or less in isolation from the corporate environment. This means they lose the connection to the inter-disciplinary research discourse. In particular the construction of musical instruments - which intersects with cultural, technical, economic and social history - provides numerous opportunities for studies that investigate the mutually connected developments at a (cross-) regional level. Such studies make a contribution to macro-historic transformation processes (e.g. changes from an agricultural, small business economic system to an industrial one, the formation of national states).

As a result of expanding the study of history to include culture, the objection is raised when it comes to corporate history that is not only discourses and practices, intellectual theories and cultural constructs that determine how history develops, rather historical processes have economic foundations that are primarily created by companies. From the perspective of the company it would be interesting to ask how entrepreneurs and companies in the musical instrument industry are able to successful in the marketplace. In this regard, this not only concerns location issues for musical instrument companies, influences from trade and international policies , but also relates to issues relating to political orientation, the cultural and value orientations of companies, efforts to adapt and the freedom to design ad to acquire expertise and marketing strategies. As Hartmut Berghoff has demonstrated, using the company Hohner as an example, that the sales competence of a company can be more important than technical, manufacturing expertise, it is advisable to consider future marketing strategies in musical instrument construction in close detail and to develop this potential knowledge for our subject.
