Klaas Hoek:

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

This cd by Klaas Hoek of the Netherlands, is a very special one, due to multiple reasons. This cd will be available starting the 1st of March 2010. Up until now Schubert was not really repertoire in harmonium concerts. I can not recall any performance in concert of Schubert's music played on harmonium. The two instruments played: even for those who know about reed organ, these two are peculiar. Just because these two are very, very rare! There is the Hörügel, designed to produce a symfonic sound. And otherwise the Mannborg, fitted with 'all the bells and whistles' to make it a succesfull Kunstharmonium. Instruments like these were expensive, hence were and still are very, very rare. This page will be a long one, because of the instruments and the Schubert music. And we have a lot to share with you. |

Soundclip track 01 is a combination of four German/Austrian dances referring to the "Ländler". About this dance this information:
The ländler is a folk dance in 3/4 time which was popular in Austria, south Germany and German Switzerland at the end of the 18th century. It is a dance for couples which strongly features hopping and stamping. It was sometimes purely instrumental and sometimes had a vocal part, sometimes featuring yodeling. When dance halls became popular in Europe in the 19th century, the ländler was made quicker and more elegant, and the men shed the hobnail boots which they wore to dance it. Along with a number of other folk dances from Germany and Bohemia, it is thought to have contributed to the evolution of the waltz. A number of classical composers wrote or included ländler in their music, including Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Anton Bruckner. In several of his symphonies Gustav Mahler replaced the scherzo with a ländler. The Carinthian folk tune quoted in Alban Berg's Violin Concerto is a ländler, and another features in Act II of his opera Wozzeck. The "German Dances" of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn also resemble ländler. Britten's Peter Grimes features a Ländler in the scene where a dance night is occurring in the Hall. The Broadway musical and later film The Sound of Music features a scene where the protagonists Maria and Captain von Trapp dance a ländler; however, it is not a traditional but a choreographed form. The instrumental tune used in that sequence is a slowed-down re-arrangement of a song heard earlier in the show, "The Lonely Goatherd". (derived from Wikipedia both English and Dutch) |
Soundclip track 10 is to hear the explosive dynamics.
Soundclip track 12 is about the vocal sound of this Mannborg
Soundclip track 13 is the symphonic sound:
| The Doppelgänger is wandering through a deserted city and end up standing under the window of the woman he loves and in his dreamlike state of mind he see his own image, "Du Doppelgänger, du blasse Geselle! Was äffst du nach mein Liebesleid, das mich gequält auf dieser Stelle so manche Nacht, in alter Zeit?" |
The title "Der Doppelgänger" is Schubert's; in Heine's "Buch der Lieder" the poem is untitled, making the ending a surprise.
Still ist die Nacht, es ruhen die Gassen, Da steht auch ein Mensch und starrt in die Höhe, Du Doppelgänger! Du bleicher Geselle! |
The night is quiet, the streets are calm, A man stands there also and looks to the sky, O you Doppelgänger you pale comrade! |
