CD-51 "Laten wij bouwen"
CD 'Let us buildVOX NIO, a mixed choir from Ermelo, Holland, presents religious and secular choral music in the Harmonium Museum Netherlands in the rural village Barger-Compascuum. This amateur choir is formed by mainly professional staffmembers of Veldhuizen, one of Holland's biggest institutions for taking care of psychiatric patients and physically handicapped people. The conductor, composer, organsit and textwriter Marten Kammenga also is a staffmember of Veldhuizen, where he is a muscial therapist. Besides all his work he happens to like the harmonium very much. This background founded the idea to record choral music accompanied by harmonium. Where the instrumentalists are professionally skilled, the choir is in fact an ad hoc one, just for the fun. No pretentious attitude. Singing te be happy. An it might not be of the highest musical standards, it is most defenitely a most historic approach: Singing at the harmonium. The history of reed organs has proven it: Through singing, it became the very popular instrument for home music. Wherever one lived. An by recording this type of music in the Dutch 'Walhalla' of free reed instruments, the historic circled is finalised. And joyfull it is to hear this music. No pretentions, but surely not 'shallow music'. The poetry of Kamminga can be valued, because all the texts are in the booklet in full. In my opinion a few more of the all time tophits in religious choral music could have been recorded on this disc. The two, tracks 2 & 8, are instrumental contributions to the recording. And surely, the tonal resources of all these instruments used for this recording, have been used! The choral music by Kamminga, are mostly modern songs, written for mixed choir. So to say: unknown repertoire up until now. However, even in these new compositions we find some counter-melodies taken from the Geneva Psalter. And, again, a history circle is closed: Psalms sung and accompanied on reed organ.
